A YOUNG woman who assaulted a friend during a night out in Birkenhead has appeared at court.

Jasmine Griffin had pleaded guilty to hitting Emma Davies in the face when she appeared before Wirral Magistrates on December 16 last year.

The 18-year-old, of Liscard, was back in court for sentence today (Wednesday, January 22).

The court heard that on August 4 last year Griffin and Miss Davies were at Club LQD on Argyle Street in Birkenhead.

Griffin, who has no previous convictions, admitted that she had drunk alcohol and taken a "tiny bit" of cocaine during the night out, along with Miss Davies.

She had asked Miss Davies if she could stay at her home that night and is said to have become upset when this request was rejected as Miss Davies had two children at home and said it wasn't right for Griffin to stay after having consumed drink and drugs.

This is said to have upset Griffin, who hit Miss Davies in the face, leaving her with a wound that required four stitches.

Griffin told the court: "I did not mean for this to end the way it did. Emma has always been a friend.

"I had drunk too much and had one line of cocaine, a tiny bit of cocaine. Before that night out I had never taken any before.

"I have never been in trouble before and lost my job because of this."

District Judge Timothy Boswell imposed a twelve-month rehabilitation order -which included 80 hours of unpaid work – and £200 compensation.

Addressing Griffin after sentencing, District Judge Boswell said: "You were only just 18 when this happened and have no previous convictions.

"You have pleaded guilty early to this, which is a credit to you. The incident was out of character and this was a medium level assault.

"There is a lot of good to be said about you in terms of what you do. Rehabilitation can help you develop the skills to help coping with your emotions in some situations.

"Whatever happened that night, you had too much to drink and for, the first time ever, had taken some cocaine. You were worse-for-wear from the alcohol.

"You are only 18 years old and there's no reason why this should define your life going forward. I hope there is no reason for us to see you in court again in the future."
