IN their first league game of the season Wirral fielded a much changed and younger side but lost to a more experienced and heavier Blackburn team.
For the first quarter of the game play was contained in mid field with defences to the fore.
On 20 minutes Blackburn scored from a push over try and repeated the dose a few minutes later to leave the away side 0-10 up at half time.
Early in the second half Wirral capitalised on a Blackburn mistake with George Burrows passing to Mark Williams who raced in from 65 metres with a Blackburn player in hot pursuit to score and the conversion reduced the arrears to 7-10.
Thereafter a combination of injuries to Wirral players and the Blackburn’s formidable pack enabled them to score four further tries with two conversions.
Wirral are hopeful that some of the other players in their squad will be available for next Saturday’s visit to Manchester.
