Plans for a new sports centre set to become a ‘central hub’ for the community have moved one step forward despite the coronavirus crisis.

Activity For All’s large-scale plan to develop a Health and Wellbeing centre at Arrowe Commercial Park, Upton, has been approved by Wirral Council’s planning officers.

Under the company’s plans the centre will contain three indoor 3G football pitches, allowing teams to play throughout the year regardless of the weather.

A host of other facilities will be on offer, including climbing and high ropes courses, a soft play area and a health and wellbeing room.

There will also be a cafe/bar area at the centre, with an emphasis on healthiness.

Activity For All say the centre will be designed to be accessible and attractive to people of all ages.

The company was not able to confirm an exact opening date for the centre due to the lockdown but said it is still pushing ahead with its plans.

Activity For All is a community interest company based in Merseyside which aims to get people of all ages involved in physical activity.

The company works with local institutions in the North West and North Wales, including hundreds of schools, NHS Trusts and sports clubs.

Activity for All has similar community facilities elsewhere in the North West and North Wales, including sports centres in Bootle and Holywell.

Before the coronavirus outbreak, the company was regularly running physical activities for more than 10,000 people every week.

Mike Smethurst, director of Activity for All, said: “These are challenging times for everyone but it has given us an opportunity to look to the future and really start developing our project behind the scenes.

“The opening date for the centre will very much depend on the ease of lockdown but this hasn’t stopped us with putting everything in place.”

Mr Smethurst said making the site family friendly was a central goal of the project.

He said: “There are so many exciting elements to this Health and Wellbeing Centre and there is something for everyone in the family.”

“Bringing families and the community together was a major focus of ours when designing the centre.

“With the new facility due to be ever so popular it is a great opportunity for other businesses to get involved.

“There are sponsorship opportunities, pre-register bookings available and corporate event packages all available now.”
