A scheme that will give thousands of UK residents £150 off their electricity bills has now opened.
As we get closer to winter, energy bills are only getting higher. Millions have had to keep their heating turned off due to the ongoing cost of living crisis. To try and help combat this, the Warm Home Discount Scheme for winter 2023/24 is now in place.
The scheme is a one-off discount that is applied to your electricity bill between October 2023 and March 31, 2024. If eligible, you will receive the discount automatically, and will receive a letter by early January 2024.
The government website Gov.uk recommends that if you believe you are eligible but have not received a letter by this time, you should get in touch with the Warm Home Discount Scheme before February 29 2024. The discount will not affect Cold Weather Payments or Winter Fuel Payments.
Depending on where you live, there are different ways to qualify for this payment.
For England and Wales residents, you qualify if you get the Guarantee Credit element of Pension credit or if you are on a low income and have high energy bills.
For those living in Scotland, you qualify if you get the Guarantee Credit element of the Pension Credit or are on a low income and meet your energy supplier’s criteria.
The scheme is not available in Northern Ireland.
How to apply
