Update after man slashed in neck with machete

Police have provided an update on the condition of a man who was reportedly slashed with a machete in a "targeted attack".

On Sunday armed police were called to a Eaton Street, Prescot, at around 10.25am following reports a man was attacked with a blade.

Officers said a man in his 40s was found with injuries to his neck and leg believed to have been inflicted with a machete.

He was rushed to hospital, and police confirmed on this evening (Monday) the victim was in a stable condition.

Forensic, CCTV and witness enquiries were carried out on Sunday as police look to establish the circumstances and the exact scene of the incident, initially thought to be be in the region of Eaton Street and Hope Street.

A spokesman said: "Emergency services were called to Eaton Street to reports of a man in his 40s having been assaulted, possibly with a machete."

Detective Inspector Steve McGrath said: "For such an incident to have taken place in the daytime on a main road will have been shocking for anyone to witness.

"At this early stage we think it was a targeted and isolated incident, but need to understand precisely what happened and why.

"If you did see or hear anything, or were passing by Eaton Street and Hope Street and have CCTV or dashcam, come forward and we will take positive action to identify those responsible.
