The number of coronavirus deaths has more than doubled compared with the same time last week, new figures released today show.
The UK's death toll reached 44,798 after 148 further deaths were recorded across all settings.
The rise is more the double the increase of 67 that was recorded last Saturday.
A total of 288,953 people have been diagnosed with Covid-19 in the UK since the beginning of the pandemic.
Of those, 820 new cases were confirmed in the past 24 hours.
The figures come as coronavirus restrictions were further lifted in England as people were allowed to go outdoor swimming and play grassroot sport for the first time since March.
Lidos, water parks, outdoor theatres and grassroots sport are allowed to resume – just a week after pubs, hotels, hairdressers and restaurants reopened on 'Super Saturday'.
Yesterday, Liverpool's Director of Public Health warned of a spike in coronavirus cases among young people in the city, particularly in south Liverpool.
The places affected include Belle Vale, Childwall, Woolton, Knotty Ash, Allerton and Hunts Cross.
Mobile testing centres will be in the area over the next week or so, carrying out swab tests on people with symptoms who have pre-booked an appointment via the NHS website.
