Two police officers put in hospital after vicious attack

Two police officers were left needing hospital treatment after they were attacked in Ellesmere Port.

The officers were assaulted while trying to make an arrest, Cheshire Police said.

On Monday morning, at around 8.30am, the Force were called to reports of men acting aggressively on Wesminster Road.

Once they arrived, a 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage while another man fled on foot, Cheshire Live reports.

He was later caught up with and arrested, but as he was detained the officers were attacked.

Both were taken to hospital and one was discharged, while the other is still being cared for.

A Cheshire police spokesperson said: "At around 8.30am on Monday (July 20) police were called to reports of two men acting aggressively on Westminster Road, Ellesmere Port.

"Officers attended the scene and arrested a 22-year-old man on suspicion of criminal damage.

"A second man fled the scene and was chased by officers on foot.

"Officers subsequently located the man and he was also arrested on suspicion of criminal damage.

"During the arrest two officers were assaulted.

"Both officers were taken to hospital to be checked over – one has been released and one remains in hospital at this time."
