'Suspect identified' after girl dies in crash

A suspect has reportedly been identified after a little girl was killed in a van and tram crash yesterday morning in Manchester city centre. The three year old was walking on Mosley Street at around 10am yesterday when she was hit by a white Mercedes van which is said to have mounted the pavement after crashing into a tram.

There was a huge emergency services response to the incident, with two air ambulances being dispatched to the scene. The little girl was rushed to hospital but later died of her injuries, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Police began hunting the van driver, who is understood to have fled the scene, and an investigation was launched. It is understood GMP has now identified a suspect. Flowers and touching messages have since been left at the scene where the young girl died, as well as on social media.

Previously, Assistant Chief Constable Stephanie Parker said: “Firstly, I would like to send my condolences to the family of the victim. This is a tragic incident where a young girl has sadly lost her life despite the responding officer's best attempts to save her.

“Our investigation is ongoing and we are investigating a number of lines of enquiry. This is being treated as an isolated incident with no wider threat to the community.

"I thank the public for their patience with the disruption this incident has caused in the city centre and our officers will remain on patrol into the evening. If you have any concerns please speak to our officers and raise them as they are here to help and assist. We understand the effect an incident such as this will have had on any witnesses and our thoughts are with everyone concerned.
