She said the strange lights moved quickly across the clouds for a good 10 minutes and wondered if it could have been coming from the cruise ship MSC Virtuosa which has been moored in Liverpool docks overnight.

People from all over Merseyside on Facebook have been speculating as to what the lights are and where they're coming from.

One man posted on a Wirral group: "What are these strange lights over Wallasey on Wirral? Thought ET was going to come in to land."

Another woman replied: "I can see them from mine too..I think its lights or lasers coming from Cammell Lairds, I live by there…I hope they are anyway lol."

Another person thought they may have been Elon Musk's Starlink satellites.

However, the lights could also been seen in Liverpool with one woman posting in Penny Lane Gossip: "Anyone know what the lights in the sky tonight are? Seem too fast for spotlights. Is it something to do with the trains?"

This prompted another member of the group to look out of their window and post: "Oh my goodness just looked out of the window – how strange!"
