Liverpool has had the most roadworks of any city in the UK outside London in a three year period, new data reveals.

A Freedom of Information request from Little Loans, shared with the LDRS, shows that the city had 125,398 separate roadworks between 2016 and 2019.

That put it ahead of any other city apart from the capital, with Belfast coming second on 78,628 and Bristol in third on 75,855.

Liverpool has been the focus of a number of major roadworks schemes in recent years.

Like many UK cities, road improvements were one of the first things to be impacted when council budgets reduced after the introduction of austerity.

Mayor Joe Anderson launched the Better Roads programme in an attempt to tackle a backlog of necessary work and modernise large sections of the road network.

It will see £500m spent on roadworks over a five year period.

The Liverpool City Centre Connectivity Scheme, which will reshape how traffic flows through the city, is also currently in progress.

Other major works that are either in progress or complete include the Princes Avenue STEP scheme, the North Liverpool Key Corridor and the construction of a road connecting the new Isle of Man Ferry Terminal on the city's waterfront.

Last year also saw the demolition of the Churchill Way flyovers and the roads they carried after structural surveys revealed the flyovers could not support the weight of vehicles travelling on them safely.
