Reports of house party sees police arrive in PPE gloves and masks

Police were called to reports of a house party in a Wavertree street during lockdown.

Officers from Merseyside Police arrived at a house on Darrel Drive in Wavertree shortly after 6pm on Monday, wearing PPE including masks and gloves.

This came after the force received reports that a house party was taking place in the street and that people had been seen coming in and out of the address.

Police said no further details were available but no-one was arrested during the incident.

Another officer can also be seen emerging from the back of the property wearing a protective face mask.

This comes after the government urged the public to continue to follow social distancing rules over the weekend.

Mr Jamson said: "You're putting rescuers like ourselves at risk, and other people."

Government guidelines have urged people to only leave the house if it's essential, like going to the shop for food or medicine.

Speaking to the ECHO last week, Chief Constable Andy Cooke of Merseyside Police, said "enforcement is very much a last resort" as he explained his approach to new legislation prompted by the pandemic.

Mr Cooke said he was encouraging his officers to speak to members of the public and was keen for them to promote the responsible behaviour he said patrols were seeing across Merseyside.

He is urging officers to deal with any concerns through encouragement, with prosecution only likely to follow after warnings have been ignored.
