Poignant pictures of Liverpool's Remembrance Day service
Liverpool's annual Remembrance Service took place outside St George's Hall this morning
A haunting silence fell over Liverpool this morning as crowds paid their respects to they who shall not grow old.
Hundreds of people dressed in sombre black gathered under a canopy of umbrellas to watch ex-servicemen and troops march past the cenotaph on St George's Plateau this morning. Poignant speeches and prayers were read from the steps of St George's Hall before the Last Post rang out over the square, followed by the traditional firing of the gun to signify the start of the two-minute silence.
Music was played by the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment and the drums and pipes of the Liverpool Scottish Regiment Association as civic leaders, military personnel members of the emergency services, legal counsels and religious representatives took turns laying down wreaths of poppies.
Here are some pictures from the touching ceremony which drew to a close shortly before noon.
