Library talks
THE first in a series of 'Friday talks' at the re-opened Wallasey Village Library will take place later this week.
Parks, promenades and pleasure grounds – Wallasey’s Open Spaces, is the subject of illustrated talk by Elizabeth Davey, described by the event's organiser as one of Wirral's most renowned heritage speakers. It will take place at the venue on Friday (February 28) from 2-3pm. Admission Free – donations towards the library will be gratefully received.
Art exhibition
Pictures at an exhibition – a display of work by local artist Liv Roberts is on view at The Crafty Tavern in Irby until March 28.
Poetry contests
ENTRIES are now being taken for this year’s Wirral Open Poetry Festival competition.
The contest will be adjudicated by distinguished poets Helen Ivory and Martin Figura, while special Wirral prizes for poets from Wirral will be adjudicated by well-known Merseyside poet, Pauline Rowe.
The closing date for entries is Friday, May 30. The entry fee is £4 per poem or £10 for three poems. For full details and to enter, check the website: wirralpoetryfestival.org.uk
A spokesperson for the organisers told the Globe: “In partnership with the Christopher Salmon Foundation and Wirral Libraries we support the delivery of the annual Christopher Salmon Poetry Competition.
“This year’s Christopher Salmon Poetry Competition will be the last one in the series, which began in 2010, to commemorate Wirral pupil, Chris Salmon, who passed away very suddenly aged just 15, from a streptococcal virus and pneumonia.
"Poems on the theme of ‘hope’ can be submitted to the Christopher Salmon Competition by young people aged 19 years and under in full time education in Wirral. There is a £100 prize for each winner in five age categories.”

Craft fair
PENINSULA Arts and Crafts Association is holding what promises to be 'a day filled with unique crafts' at Hoylake Parade Community Centre on Saturday, March 8 from 10.30am-3.30pm.
A spokesperson for the organisers said the event was a chance to 'explore a variety of handmade goods created by talented artisans from around the area.

Sunrockers
MIKE Byrne and the Sunrockers are back at Heswall British Legion a week on Wednesday (March 5), promising 'another great of rock and roll'. Doors at open 7.30pm. Admission is £5 on door.
Panto time
THEATRE4ALL.NW’s production of Ben Crocker’s rock ‘n’ roll pantomime Beauty and The Beast will be staged at Neston Town Hall this Saturday and Sunday, March 1 and 2.

'Fresh perspectives'
AN exhibition celebrating the 'emerging' artistic talents of students from five Wirral secondary schools opens this weekend.
Fresh Perspectives – on view at the Lady Lever Art Gallery in Port Sunlight until April 27 – features work by young people aged 14-18.
It celebrates their creativity and features what the organisers describe as 'an impressive selection of artwork exploring a wide range of themes across a variety of different media'.
This will be the sixth time that the exhibition has taken place.

The schools taking part are Prenton High School for Girls, South Wirral High School, Upton Hall School FCJ, Weatherhead High School and West Kirby Grammar School.

Race for life
ENTRIES are now being taken for this year's Wirral Race For Life events in aid of Cancer Research UK.
The Globe-backed fundraiser, taking place in Birkenhead Park on Sunday May 18, is open to people of all ages and abilities. People can choose from 3k, 5k and 10k events. There is also a chance to take part in Pretty Muddy, a 5k mud-splattered obstacle course, and there’s a Pretty Muddy Kids option.
