The conversion of a former police station near Anfield stadium can go ahead after planning permission was granted.

Members of Liverpool Council's planning committee granted the application to convert the Anfield Road building at a meeting on May 5.

It was the first full virtual meeting of the council since it had to cancel or postpone most of its public meetings after the coronavirus outbreak hit.

The meeting was supposed to take place on April 28, but technical difficulties meant all decisions supposed to be taken by the committee were postponed for a week.

The new hotel is set to have 26 rooms and will look to cater for fans attending games at Liverpool's home ground.

Anfield's three ward councillors had opposed the application, but committee members voted to approve it by eight votes to one.

Documents submitted with the application said: "The proposal is to convert the existing building into a bed and breakfast.

"Crucially for this particular discussion, there will be no restaurant or bar.

"The proposed bed and breakfast is primarily aimed at the market associated with the Anfield Stadium and is therefore likely to be busy when the immediately surrounding area is also busy."

Slides presented at the meeting confirmed the site would have on-site management 24 hours a day and repeated that there would be no plans to open a bar in the hotel.

The building is currently in use as an House in Multiple Occupation (HMO).
