New 12-hour Section 60 Order put in place by police

It follows two incidents of violence in the area

Another Section 60 Order has been put in place in Walton today following two incidents of violence in the area. Officers were called to Roxburgh Street at around 5.20pm on Tuesday following reports a man had been assaulted.

Witnesses reported a man had been assaulted by a group of males with what they described as poles or bats in an alleyway off Roxburgh Street and Delamore Street. Officers attended and a 57-year-old man from Walton was arrested on suspicion of affray, possession of an offensive weapon and resisting arrest. He was taken into custody for questioning.

A short time later, at 6pm, emergency services attended a house in Ruskin Street following reports a man had suffered multiple stab wounds. The victim, a man in his 30s, had entered a house on Ruskin Street where he was located by officers and taken to hospital for treatment for slash wounds to his leg, back and hand.

The victim remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition. Residents in the area reported hearing "loads of shouting" at about 5pm. One woman told the ECHO: "I was upstairs bathing the kids when I heard loads of shouting. Next thing there was just police everywhere."

Detective Chief Inspector Ben Dyer said: “Our enquiries into this incident are at a very early stage, but based on our initial assessment of the circumstances, we believe this was a targeted attack carried out by a number of males.

“The injuries sustained by the victim are extensive and it will no doubt come as a huge shock to those living on Ruskin Street and the surrounding area.

“They can expect to see increased police activity in the coming days, and I urge residents to come forward with any information or concerns they may have.”

The order was put in place at 5pm today (Thursday, March 13) and will stay active until 5pm on Friday 14 March. The extension has been introduced to prevent incidents of disorder and criminality.

The Order, under S60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, gives officers enhanced powers to stop and search individuals in the area and is designed to minimise serious violence.The area in Walton incorporates the area bounded by Queens Drive, Breeze Hill, Brewster Street, Commercial Road, Lambeth Road, Foley Street, Kearsley Street, Everton Valley, Walton Breck Road, Arkles Road, Arkles Lane, Utting Avenue and Queens Drive.Inspector Ivan Martin said: “We have extended the Section 60 Order which allows us to stop and search people suspected of carrying weapons or planning any criminality. This order will give officers on the ground the ability to stop and search anyone suspected of carrying weapons or planning any criminality.“We will maintain a highly visible police presence, and this is one of a number of measures we are taking to disrupt those who would assault or attack anyone in the area.
