A murder probe is underway after two men entered a house in Kirkby and attacked the occupant who later died.
Police rushed to the scene on Clorain Road at about 10.30pm last night following reports intruders had gone inside the address.
It was said they left a short time later, and the occupant, a man, 36, was found with a serious head injury.
He was taken to hospital where he died, this morning.
A murder investigation has been launched and two men have been arrested, aged 32 and 34.
They are to be quizzed on suspicion of murder and remain in custody.
Detectives are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen anything of importance or who could have valuable information.
Detective Inspector Jackie Guinness, of Merseyside Police, said: “A man has tragically died following a suspected assault in Kirkby last night and we are working to establish the full circumstances.

The murder follows an attack very close to Clorain Road, on Simonswood Lane, when a man was slashed to his face, at about 1.25pm, on Sunday.
The 32-year-old, assaulted by two men, was taken to hospital with a "laceration" to his face which is not believed to be life threatening.
Today, police told the ECHO that there was currently no suggested links between the two incidents.
