MSE warns thousands could be missing out on pension payments

Money Saving Expert has issued a warning to thousands of women who could be missing out on huge pension payments.

The finance gurus are urging women to check whether they have been underpaid for their state pension.

It comes after a warning to married women in June, who hit the state pension age before April 2016.

These individuals were told that they could be owed money if they had received less than 60% of their husband's pension.

If this was the case they may entitled to a substantial boost of up to that 60% figure.

After following the advice many people reported receiving lump sums, with the average payout coming in at just under £10,000.

But now MSE says the rule could also apply to women who are widowed or divorced, and those over the age of 80.

The issue was highlighted by former pensions minister Steve Webb, who is urging these groups to check if they could also have been underpaid.

Women who are divorced and have reached state pension age without remarrying could be eligible for up an increase of up to £134.25 a week.

While those who were underpaid before or after their husband died, could also be entitled to an increase, along with women over the age of 80 whether they are married, single, widowed or divorced.

According to the finance experts, finding whether you fall into one of these categories is the difficult part.

The most straight forward way to do this is by contacting the Pension Service here.
