An Ellesmere Port woman who saw her life change overnight after her viral video catapulted her to online fame has announced she will be quitting her social media career to "put herself first". Becki Jones, 32, is a content creator on social media app TikTok, where she uses her channel to share regular food and lifestyle videos with an army of fans.

The TikTok star has amassed nearly 900,000 followers on the app – but she has been outspoken in the past about the hate she received from 'troll' accounts who attack her online. In a lengthy Instagram statement, Becki announced she would be stepping away from her social media career for good.

The update comes after the social media influencer took an extended break from social media this week. In her post she said: "Hi everyone. The past few days I have done so much reflection and been really thinking about my health and mental health. I started my TikTok in 2020 where one little slow cooker hot chocolate went viral and I became a TikToker…

"Wow in these five years there has been so many amazing memories I've made, met some of the best people along the way and had so many opportunities that I'm so thankful for. I honestly wouldn't have had the life I had for five years if it wasn't for all my amazing supporters – you, the followers.

"From going live and just chatting and singing with friends to making some well known catchphrases along the way such as 'McFlurry or fruit bag' and we can't forget my B&M era. The reason I'm reminiscing is because the last few days I've reflected and realised I'm not happy any more being a social media content creator.

"The app for me, although I love it and all of you, there is just so much negativity and who wants that in their life? I have a loving family and amazing friends and I want to start spending more time with them, focusing on my future and I want to make realistic goals…

"So I'm very sad to say that I will no longer be posting on my socials and I'll be stopping my time on social media. This decision hasn't been made lightly or quickly. To be honest with you all I have felt like this for a while now and I'm just unhappy and I need to put myself first.

"It's only when I've sat back and thought about it was when I realised it's social media, it's draining although there are so many amazing things to it and although I thought 'no Becki, just hang in there' I don't want to get into a cycle of coming away and coming back because it's not good for me. I just want to be happy, enjoy life and concentrate on being the best version of myself for my future.

"I never planned to become a person so many people follow, I never wanted any sort of 'fame' but it's a part of my life that I'll always be so grateful for and never regret. I will miss you all, I'll miss updating you on silly little things or finding the best Easter eggs or making a dance look so difficult when it's only five seconds long.

"I'll miss it, I'll miss that version of myself that just wanted to spread a bit of positivity on an app and make people smile. I love you all so much, but please don't be sad. I'm going into a new era of myself. Please don't ever forget to just always choose to be kind and spread a little bit of positivity if you can in the world because when people have done this for me I've felt so uplifted. Bye everyone xx"

Speaking to the ECHO previously, Becki explained that her overnight online fame has also come at a price, with the content creator frequently subjected to vile abuse in her comments section. The 32-year-old said the trolls sometimes leave her feeling like 'the most hated woman on TikTok' – but she was determined to remain positive and not let the negativity bring her down.

Becki said: "It does feel like that sometimes, that I'm the most hated woman on TikTok. It's something that goes hand in hand with your account growing. I remember uploading a video of a takeaway I'd eaten or of me baking and it was something that was unhealthy, a treat, and every comment was disgusting.

"I sat and thought to myself 'why do they hate me so much, just for eating?'. I accept people's opinions but I think people nowadays feel they are entitled to too much of an opinion. I think it's made me develop a thick skin. I did a video the other day talking about the hate I get and I said 'I'm used to it' and it is sad to say. It's built me up to be more resilient. People's opinions are important but I don't care as much any more."

She added: "I would love to sit down and ask [the trolls] why they do it. I don't know if I was an easier target. I've never denied that I'm plus size or fat or said I've got the best diet, but there are other people on TikTok that do similar content but don't get the same hate. People don't like the way I speak, my accent, the way I film stuff. I would say the people writing stuff are very unhappy in their own lives to be hating on someone else."
