A masked thug threatened and tried to rob two women in a car park lift in the city centre.

The victims entered the lift at the Hanover Street Q Park, on Gradwell Street, shortly after 1pm on Wednesday when a man also got in and threatened them.

He demanded cash and phones from the women who bravely refused to hand them over.

The attempted robber was then forced to flee empty handed from the lift in the direction of Merseyside Police

In a statement, a spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "We are appealing for information following an attempted robbery on Hanover Street this afternoon (Wednesday 9 June).

"At around 1.15pm we received a report that a man had threatened two women in the lift at Q Park, Liverpool One.

"The man was reported to have demanded money and mobile phones from the victims and, when they refused, made off on foot in the direction of Gradwell Street.

"No injuries have been reported.

"Police are currently at the scene while CCTV, witness and forensic enquiries are carried out. "
The suspect is described as white male, around 5ft 6in tall, skinny build, wearing a black hoody, black tracksuit and face mask.

Chief Inspector Gary O’Rourke said: “We are on the early stages on an investigation into an attempted robbery in Q Park this afternoon.

“While the two victims were unharmed, this incident will have been very shocking for them and we are doing all we can to find the man responsible and bring him to justice.

“This is a very busy area and we are asking anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious, or witnessed a man matching the description of the suspect in the Hanover Street area this afternoon to contact us.

"Any information you hold could be vital to our investigation.”
