Man, 36, seriously injured following suspected hit and run

A 36-year-old man has suffered serious injuries following an alleged hit and run. The incident happened on Cumberland Road, Southport, at about 7.53pm, when a white Ford transit van collided with a pedestrian.
The injured pedestrian was taken to hospital by ambulance and is being treated for serious injuries. His condition is described as serious but not life threatening.
Police said the driver of the transit van, a 57-year-old man from Southport, did not stop at the scene. A man was arrested a short while later on suspicion of causing serious injury through careless driving, driving under the influence of alcohol and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.
He has been taken to a police station where he will be interviewed by officers. Officers from the Roads Policing team are carrying out examinations at the scene and anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has any dashcam footage which could help with inquiries, is asked to contact the police.
A large cordon was in place this evening while emergency services dealt with the incident. One man, who saw a number of police cars heading towards the scene, said he knew something "really serious" had happened.
He told the ECHO: "We didn’t see the incident but knew straight away there were real concerns about what had happened. We were actually heading away from the scene as we drove through Birkdale and Ainsdale blue flashing lights and sirens raced past us again and again.
"Police patrol cars, unmarked cars and a first response ambulance crew were among the vehicles heading towards the town centre, making the journey one by one or in pairs as they reacted to an unfolding situation.
"It was pretty concerning because it felt clear the emergency services believed something really serious had happened. I just hope no-one has been seriously hurt."
