Major junction to reopen after 18 month closure

A major road through Runcorn will finally reopen on Friday following an 18-month closure to build a new roundabout.

The Bridgewater Expressway will again be open to traffic now the new roundabout linking the road with the town centre has been completed and drivers will be able to access both the town centre and Greenway Road from the expressway.

The junction is intended to improve connections between Runcorn town centre, the station and the Silver Jubilee Bridge as part of Halton Council’s ambitious Runcorn Station Quarter redevelopment plans and follows the demolition of the “Trumpet Loop” road.

Cllr Stan Hill, Halton’s executive board member for transport, said: “Reopening this major piece of our road network marks significant progress in our ambitions to improve connectivity and create an impressive new gateway to our borough from Runcorn Station.

“You can already see the staggering difference demolition has made, completely opening up the view from the station across to the town centre. We have a really exciting vision for Runcorn Station Quarter and this reopening enables us to move one step closer to achieving it.”

“I’d like to thank all of the motorists whose journeys have been disrupted by this closure for their patience.”

However, the Silver Jubilee Bridge itself will remain closed for the time being, although it is expected to reopen in the autumn following its prolonged closure.

The bridge closed for repairs in October 2017 and was supposed to reopen a year later, but the council’s plans to redevelop the area around Runcorn station have seen its reopening delayed repeatedly.

At a council committee meeting in July, Halton’s transport director Tim Gibbs said: “What’s holding it up now is the Runcorn Station Quarter work and the work on the roundabout on the expressway.

“Essentially we are waiting on that piece of road which I’m hoping will be the end of September, autumn time this year.”

With the roundabout complete and the expressway reopened, the way should be clear for the Silver Jubilee Bridge to reopen at the end of September.
