Drivers are trapped on the M57 during rush hour after a huge fuel spill closed the motorway.
Emergency services are at the scene between Junction 1 at Tarbock Island to J2 at Prescot after the spill on the carriageway.
Police have warned that long delays should be expected as this will be a lengthy closure until the road is cleaned.
The motorway is currently being assessed after the spill which happened shortly before 4pm on Friday afternoon.

400 litres of fuel on the motorway
Around 400 litres of fuel were reportedly spilled onto the M57 on Friday afternoon.
According to travel site INRIX the clean up operation is in progress.
They said on their website: "Main carriageway closed and queueing traffic due to fuel spillage on M57 Northbound from J1 M62 J6 (Tarbock Island) to J2 A57 Liverpool Road (Prescot).
"Congestion to to the northbound approach from the A5300 Knowsley Expressway with around fifteen minute delays.
"Trapped traffic released.
"Road closed at 15:35 following a lorry spilling 400 litres of fuel.
"Traffic is being diverted via the entry and exit slip roads whilst a clean up operation is in progress."
Warning to drivers from authorities working on M57
Drivers are being warned to obey the low speed limits that are in place around the spillage scene on the M57 this afternoon.
Highways England tweeted: "Traffic caught in the closure for the incident #M57 northbound J1 to J2 will now be ran passed scene on the hard shoulder please obey the low speed limits."
Trapped traffic now cleared but motorway still closed
The queuing traffic has now been released but the motorway remains closed.
A large amount of diesel is still on the carriageway after a goods vehicle lost it's fuel tank.
