Live: Large blaze at Merseyside recycling plant

Firefighters were tonight tackling a large blaze at an electrical recycling plant in St Helens.

Crews called to the Cornwall Street plant at 9.12pm found the 100m x 50m building well alights.

Wearing breathing apparatus firefighters entered the plant to tackle flames on the upper floor.

The building has been evacuated and there is said to be significant smoke in the area.

Residents and nearby businesses are being told to keep their windows and doors closed.

A spokesman said anyone with existing health conditions should keep medicines nearby and call NHS 111 should they feel ill.

There is significant smoke in the area- residents and businesses nearby should keep windows and doors closed. Anyone with existing health conditions should keep medicines nearby and if any ill effects are experienced call NHS 111.

Cordons are in place as a result of the blaze in Cornwall Street, St Helens. The building has been evacuated. Crews from five engines are tackling the blaze with main branch hoses and foam.
