Inferno rips across home before police and forensics seal it off

A huge fire ripped through the kitchen and garden of a home before police and forensic teams sealed off the house.

Emergency services were called to Canterbury Way in Netherton shortly after 6pm on Wednesday to reports of smoke coming from a property.

When fire crews arrived at the home a fire had reportedly already taken hold of the kitchen and garden.

It is not yet clear whether anyone was injured in the fire but neighbours told the ECHO that paramedics were also at the scene.

Firefighters spent almost 90 minutes bringing the fire under control as police cordoned off the street and asked people in the area to stay in their homes with their windows closed.

A number of homes next to the fire were also checked for any damage before forensic officers arrived at the scene.

Pictures taken on the street showed officers in white suits coming and going from the property as a police officers guarded the cordon.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue said: "MFRS attended an incident in Canterbury Way, Netherton, this evening.

"Crews were alerted at 6.04pm and on scene at 6.10pm. Three fire engines attended.

"On arrival, crews discovered the kitchen, a lean-to and garden of a property were well alight.

"Six firefighters, wearing breathing apparatus, tackled the fire using two high pressure hose reels and a main branch.

"The fire was extinguished by 7.30pm and neighbouring properties were checked for spread."

According to the fire service, an investigation into the fire will be carried out.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue along with Merseyside Police have both been asked to confirm whether anyone was inside the proeprty at the time of the fire and if any injuries have been reported.
