For the first time since March, hundreds of bars, cafes, restaurants and pubs reopened their doors today, allowing the public to eat inside.
Like many others, one of the things I missed most during the last three months was going out for food, breakfast in particular.
So I decided to book a table at the Liverpool restaurant which serves the “best breakfast” in the country this morning (Saturday, July 4), arriving as it opened.
The Tavern is practically a Liverpool institution having been open on Smithdown Road for 30 years. On a typical morning, pre-lockdown, it is always busy with every table full.
I booked a table for 9.15am, although I still expected a bit of a wait when I arrived. So it was a nice surprise to walk straight in (after using the hand sanitiser all customers are asked to use before entering).
Staff were all wearing face masks and every other table was left empty.
I expected with so many changes there was a chance the atmosphere and overall experience of eating out could be dampened but this wasn’t the case at all.
In fact, all staff were as friendly as ever and everyone inside seemed in a good mood too – all with the understanding of how fortunate we felt being able to enjoy sitting inside a restaurant once again.
Anyone who has eaten at the Tavern before will be aware of how big it’s menu is so before I arrived I assumed it may be reduced but this was not the case. It was operating its full menu, with its classic dishes all on there.

When seated at my table I was told I I didn’t feel comfortable giving my food order to a staff member I could order through The Tavern’s website.
I didn’t chose this option, but for thought it was a nice gesture for those who maybe do feel more nervous.
Lockdown has led to many changes throughout Liverpool’s hospitality industry with us all needing to adjust to a “new normal” but while customers and staff find their way through these new measures it’s now reassuring to know that you can still rely on The Tavern to offer a great breakfast experience.
