A gunman remains on the run after he opened fire outside a home – with bullets hitting his victim in his leg.

Detectives today urged people to come forward to help catch the armed attacker following last night's incident.

The injured man, 55, was carried from the house on a stretcher, locals said, but his wounds are not life-threatening.

It is thought he was shot more than once in his leg at an address on Poplars Avenue in the Orford area of Warrington.

It is unclear if the gunman fired through a window while the 55-year-old was inside, or if the shooting occurred just outside the address.

Forensic officers dressed in white suits were outside the property this morning, combing the vicinity for clues, including any bullet casings which could help identify the gun used.

They were using long-handled pickers to scour the grassy areas for evidence.

The victim is in Warrington Hospital where his condition is stable.

Police said their probe was in its early stages, adding patrols would remain in the area to reassure any frightened members of the community.

Detective Inspector Sarah Oliver said: “I understand how concerning this incident will be for those living in the area and I want to reassure residents that they can expect to see a visible policing presence while we do everything we can to trace those responsible.

“The investigation is in its early stages and I need the help and support of the local community to provide any information they may have – even the smallest piece can be useful."

Friday night's shooting is the latest in a worrying spate of recent serious criminal incidents in Warrington.

Earlier this week, police revealed an improvised explosive device left in the garden of a home, nine days ago, was a targeted attack linked to serious and organised crime.

That also happened in Orford, on Birtles Road, less than a mile from last night's gunfire.

In January, a gunman wearing a high-visibility jacket opened fire next to a children's play park in Fairfield in an incident with known links to gangland activity.
