Residents reported seeing smoke from the box rising over the street and the fire service cordoned off the area.

As spokeswoman for the service said officers were awaiting the arrival of engineers from Scottish Power.

A notice on the Scottish Power website said: "There is a power cut in the L15 postcode area of Liverpool, affecting properties in Wavertree Nook Road, Heywood Road and surrounding streets.

"We had no advance warning of this and only became aware of it at 6:48pm.
