THERE is travel chaos this morning (Tuesday, February 4) as drivers face huge queues at both Mersey Tunnels.

Arriva North West announced on social media platform, X, that due to “severe congestion” in both the Kingsway Tunnel and Queensway Tunnels bus services would be terminating at Birkenhead bus station.

An Arriva North West spokesperson said: “Due to a major incident all cross river services will terminate in Birkenhead until 11:00. We are working to restore services as fast as possible, please allow extra time for any journeys, our colleagues at Merseyrail are accepting Cross river Tickets for the next hour.”

Due to severe congestion in both tunnels and the city centre services 464 & 487 will terminate at Birkenhead bus Station and resume service from Hinson Street. Passengers travelling to and from the city should transfer to service 407 or 437.

It is believed the disruption is due to roadworks on Byrom Street and Hunter Street.

Live traffic and travel tracker, INRIX states: "Long delays and traffic congestion on A59 Byrom Street Southbound at A5047 Hunter Street. Congestion to the M53 J1 as traffic queues through the Wallasey Tunnel and surrounding routes through Wallasey including Dock Road and Duke Street. In the roadworks area."
