A LOCAL councillor has called out against the “mindless vandalism” after a play area in New Ferry was damaged.

A gang of youths vandalised and started a fire in the children’s play area situated in New Ferry Park on Saturday (February 25).

A Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service fire engine was sent to the park at around 6.30pm. Crews extinguished a pile of rubbish which had been set on fire in the playground.

Cllr Sue Percy described the destruction as “unacceptable” and said she is working with the local community to help restore the park.

The labour councillor for Bromborough and New Ferry told the Globe: "This kind of mindless vandalism is unacceptable, and I am working within the community to help stop it.

“In Labour’s council budget, we pushed to protect youth services and to keep community police patrols and our state-of-the-art CCTV centre. This is against a backdrop of a national cost-of-living crisis, with funding for young people under threat.

“A lack of national strategy is causing discontent and unrest, leaving many teenagers with no hope for the future. Frustrations and anxiety are being played out by the children when they are outside.

“We were promised levelling up, but families are being driven into the ground by this Tory government. We need better Government funding to enable better living standards across Wirral.”

Many residents took to social media to share their despair over the vandalism.

One person said: “Makes my blood boil that they have no respect for anything, especially a child's playground.”

Another commented: “Absolute disgrace to do this. It is bad enough but to do it in the kid's play area.”

A third person added: “So distressing and unacceptable. Kids should know right from wrong.”

Another person said: “This makes me so sad, to see what this world is coming to. Destroying a little kid's playground to get out for fresh air and just be kids. So sad that these people would do this. It's just unthinkable.”
