Call for action to remove ‘eyesore’ waste tip in Birkenhead

A WIRRAL councillor is demanding urgent action to remove a "disgusting" waste site in his ward.

Brian Kenny, ward councillor for Bidston and St James, described the site on the junction of Cavendish Street and Cleveland Street in Birkenhead, as an “absolute disgrace” and has repeated calls for the Government’s Environment Agency (EA) to take action and have the tip cleared.

The dump, which is situated around the corner from Our Lady and St Edwards Primary School, is also close to homes, a church and the Miriam Medical Centre and has been there for many years.

The site was last occupied by a firm called Eco Recycling NW Ltd, but it is unclear who is responsible for allowing the waste – which includes tyres, mattresses and other household waste – to build up and occasionally spill out onto the pavement.

"I'm getting complaints from residents. The Environment Agency don't appear to be getting to grips with the situation and it is down to them to resolve the issue.

"I understand that the new owners of the site were fined for allowing the area to fall into the state that it has. It seems like years ago since I last reported the state of the site to the Environment Agency.

"The mess needs sorting."

In a letter to the Globe last week, Joel Barrow, expressed his anger about the "tip" writing: "Why is nothing been done about the fly-tip on Cleveland Street in Birkenhead that is still getting dumped on?

"It's all over the street and some people must be making a fortune off it. Oh, and it's opposite a police station so that doesn't look good."

"There have been numerous fires at the site. Council should compulsory purchase the site and give it to Magenta to build on!"

Wirral Council and The Environment Agency have both been contacted for responses.
