A COMMUNITY group has issued a warning after reports of people dumping frogs and frogspawn into a public pond.
Wallasey Community Anglers is a community group who work with Wirral Council’s Park and Countryside Team to help maintain Central Park lake and Captains Pit in Wallasey.
Yesterday (Wednesday 12) the group posted on social media to warn people against dumping frogs in Captain’s Pit.
The post read: “We have received reports of people moving frogs and their spawn from their garden ponds and dumping them into Captain’s Pit.
“We do not recommend moving frogs or their spawn. This is because moving animals can unknowingly transfer wildlife diseases and invasive plants between ponds.
“They have also added some duckweed which can be extremely hard to control.
“Please don’t just dump fish or frogs and their spawn into Captain’s Pit as this can cause major issues with biosecurity and can result in the whole of the fish stock being wiped out.”
Movement of some species, if protected or considered damaging to native wildlife, is illegal under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
