32 Liverpool independents the city wouldn’t be the same without

After a week that saw Liverpool placed under tier 3 lockdown restrictions today we're urging people to support local businesses that are much loved across the city.

Many independents have had a difficult year due to the coronavirus pandemic and the restrictions that have been introduced to help stop the spread of the virus.

But providing you stick to the guidelines, which currently include not meeting with others outside your immediate household or support bubble, you can still support the businesses that need our custom more than ever.

Here we've rounded up some of the best loved independents in Liverpool and you can let us know your favourites in the comments below.

Thoughtfully Cafe

Just a stone's throw from Liverpool ONE, Thoughtfully is tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre. Serving up a range of breakfast and lunch dishes, including cheese toasties, granola and more, Thoughtfully is known for its tranquil atmosphere.

Cleveland Square, Liverpool

East River

Independent cocktail bar East River opened in 2018, bringing a slice of New York’s Lower East Side to Liverpool. Specialising in creative cocktails and bagels, East River is designed to be two types of places, firstly a coffee-and-linger daytime hangout and secondly a cocktail and drinks kind of place at night.

Potts Coffee

Potts Coffee's pancakes have been a hit with customers

This independent opened its doors in January this year and is 100% vegan. Potts Coffee is hidden in plain sight in the city centre, and is Liverpool’s first ever 100% vegan speciality coffee shop, serving locally roasted, ethical coffee, breakfast, brunch and lunch.

Designer Kidz Boutique

Designer Kidz Boutique is a children's clothing business established in 2005. It is owned by Debbie Harrington who sells a selection of clothing at a wide range of prices.

35 High Street, Prescot

The Brunch Club

This independent serves up brunch classics with a twist. The venue was taken over by the team behind Ghetto Golf last year, who transformed the space into “the most bespoke bar experience in town”. The venue boasts a woodland-inspired interior and even offers bottomless brunch.

A Slower Space

Husband and wife Mike Waterfield, 41, and Michelle Waterfield, 40, own A Slower Space on Penny Lane

Located on Liverpool's world famous Penny Lane, this small shop is filled with plants and friendly staff who can explain how to keep them alive.

You'll also find a great selection of gifts, including jewellery, chocolate, candles and beauty products, many of which are made by local traders. You can even grab a coffee while you're there.

Lunya

One of Liverpool’s most-loved independents, Lunya is an award-winning Spanish deli, bar and restaurant. Lunya opened its doors in the city back in 2010 and won the hearts of many. Specialising in authentic Catalan and Spanish food, the eclectic menu features everything from patatas bravas to Iberico solomillo.

Wolf & Waffle

Wolf & Waffle on Berry Street, Liverpool

One of the city’s latest additions, Wolf & Waffle opened its doors in August 2020 serving up something for everyone – including vegan and gluten free options. The bar is just steps from the Chinese Arch with its interior featuring a bright bar space and floor-to-ceiling windows.

This independent shop specialises in baby clothes with shops on Broadway in Norris Green, Belle Vale Shopping Centre and St Johns Shopping Centre.

They sell designer baby and children’s clothing aged from newborn to 14.

Who said exercise and cake don’t mix? This independent has been bringing cycling and food together since it launched in 2016. The café serves up breakfast and lunch, ranging from a full English and pastries to freshly made naan pizzas, quesadillas, and pasta.

Liverpool Independent Food Delivery Service (LIDS)

Launched in response to the coronavirus crisis, LIDS is a delivery service offering everything from fresh meat and produce to cupcakes and bread from local independents. Local suppliers taking part include the Scotch Beef Shop, The Little Shoe Bakery, Liverpool Cheese Company, Laura's Little Bakery, McKuhens Butchers, H Jesse Seafood, Liverpool Produce Company and Ware UK.

The service has recently launched The Big Student Bundle, with 32 essentials including meat, veg, tinned goods and toilet roll.

Tiny Rick's is based on Smithdown Road now

Having relocated to Smithdown Road, Tiny Rick’s is beloved by cereal and board game enthusiasts. The venue has many weird and wonderful cereals from around the world to tuck into and more than 300 board games for customers to play during their visit.

Queens Wine Bar & Bistro opened last year and has been a welcome addition to the street. Its co-owner Devin Stewart from South Liverpool and owns R and H Fine Wines which is based next door too.

Queens Wine Bar & Bistro provides customers with handmade wines from traditional vineyards and seasonal cooking. The head chef at the bistro, Tom Lee, was the North West Young Chef of the Year in 2014.

When it comes to wine and spirits we actually can't imagine there are many people in the city who know more than owner Devin does.

The shop is a wine merchants, specialising in hand-made wines, with Devin always offering that first-hand approach of listening to his customers and suggesting the best wine for their occasion or taste.

Anyone who may not be familiar with his shop will have certainly drunk some of his drinks as he regularly supplies champagne and quirky beers to bars and restaurants across the city.

Abditory

Queens Avenue welcomed bar Abditory in November last year.

The bar is being operated by Camp and Furnace co-founder Steven Burgess and Josh Moore who have a long term vision for the venue to "become a well loved contribution to the city's growing collection of amazing spaces."

Its menus features a variety of wines, cocktails, beers and food such as toasties and sharing boards. There is also a range of hot drinks and coffees too.

Abditory is currently temporarily closed whilst the new current rules are ongoing.

Little Heirs and Graces

This shop in Petticoat Lane shopping arcade on Bold Street, has been established for more than 20 years and specialises in christening and communion wear for boys and girls. Prices range from £45 to £179.99.

Back in 2010 mum Laura Worthington knocked up some birthday cupcakes for her eldest daughter and realised she had a flair for baking. Laura's Little Bakery was born and 10 years later the star baker has more a 20,000 followers on Instagram, supplies cakes to city restaurants and cafes and creates show stoppers for private orders.

This Icelandic inspired coffee shop and bar can be found on Allerton Road in the heart of Woolton Village.
