Hospitals in Merseyside and the surrounding areas have reported a further 23 coronavirus deaths in a morale-sapping update.

There were 10 more deaths of Covid-19 patients in Liverpool and eight more in Wirral as the reality that the virus is still very much at large hit home for our region.

Successive lower numbers of fatalities in recent days have sparked hope that we may be through the worst of the current phase of the crisis.

The 10 Liverpool deaths all occurred at the city's main University NHS Trust.

The Peninsula's main Trust, which covers Arrowe Park Hospital, recorded a further 8 Covid-19 deaths.

Its total now stands at 177.

There were two more deaths at the St Helens and Knowsley NHS Trust, which has now recorded 163 deaths.

There was one further death at the Trust covering Southport and Ormskirk, where 119 people have died of the virus.

And two further fatalities at the Halton and Warrington Trust takes its total to 93.
